Marshall Islands
Pacific atoll republic
The Marshall Islands is a Pacific island nation consisting of 29 coral atolls and 5 isolated islands, located between Hawaii and Australia.
A former U.S. territory, it gained independence in 1986 but remains closely associated with the United States.
The islands were the site of extensive U.S. nuclear testing in the 1940s and 1950s, including the Bikini Atoll tests.
