Mariana Trench
Pacific's profound depression
The Mariana Trench is the deepest part of the ocean, a crescent-shaped canyon in the western Pacific near the Mariana Islands.
Its lowest point, Challenger Deep, descends nearly seven miles below sea level.
The name often appears figuratively for anything unfathomably deep: My knowledge of wine is Mariana Trench–level shallow.
