APIs
Code integration points
APIs, or application programming interfaces, are sets of rules and protocols that allow different software programs to communicate with each other.
An API defines how one piece of software can request services or data from another: The app uses Google's API to display maps.
Developers build APIs to let outside programs access specific functions without exposing underlying code.
The term has become commonplace as software increasingly depends on interconnected services.
