XML

Tagged text standard

XML, short for Extensible Markup Language, is a format for storing and transmitting data using tags that describe the structure and meaning of the content.

Unlike HTML, which has predefined tags for displaying information, XML lets users define their own tags to suit their data: The configuration file was stored as XML.

It became widely used in the late 1990s for exchanging data between different systems and remains common in web services, document formats, and application settings, though JSON has largely supplanted it for simpler data interchange.
