backend

Database and logic

Backend refers to the part of a system that users don't directly see or interact with—the behind-the-scenes machinery.

In computing, the backend handles data storage, server logic, and processing: She works on the backend while her partner builds the user interface.

More generally, backend describes any operational infrastructure hidden from public view: the backend of a retail operation.

Often written as two words or hyphenated: back end, back-end.
