timeout

Coach's strategic pause

Timeout is an enforced pause or break.

In sports, teams call timeouts to stop the clock and strategize.

With children, timeout is a disciplinary measure—a period of isolation to calm down: Go sit in timeout for five minutes.

In computing, a timeout occurs when a system stops waiting for a response after a set interval: The connection timed out.

As a verb (usually hyphenated or two words), to time out is to exceed an allowed duration.
