AOL
Early web giant
AOL is a pioneering internet service provider that dominated American home internet access in the 1990s and early 2000s.
The company became synonymous with dial-up modems, free trial CDs, and the greeting You've got mail.
Today AOL functions mainly as a web portal and email service, though an AOL email address often signals an older, less tech-savvy user: He still uses his AOL account from 1998.
