ARPANET

First packet network

ARPANET was a computer network developed by the U.S.

Department of Defense in the late 1960s, the earliest precursor to the modern Internet.

It pioneered packet-switching technology and protocols that allowed different computer systems to communicate.

The network connected research institutions and universities before being decommissioned in 1990, its functions absorbed by successor networks.
