woodwinds
Oboes and clarinets
Woodwinds are a family of musical instruments that produce sound when air is blown across or through them—flutes, clarinets, oboes, saxophones, and bassoons.
The name persists even though some, like the flute and saxophone, are now made of metal.
In an orchestra, the woodwinds sit between the brass and strings: The woodwinds carry the melody in the second movement.
