staple

Pantry must-have item

Two words share the spelling s-t-a-p-l-e.

The first is a fastener, U-shaped and often made of metal, in which pointed ends penetrate layers to bind them together, or in other words, staple them, as you would staple papers together.

The second staple is a basic or essential item.

Jeans are wardrobe staples.

Dietary staples are things you eat regularly: I need to buy milk, eggs, and other staples at the grocery store.

Before another noun, staple may refer either to the first (staple gun) or second (staple crop) meaning.
