consort

Monarch's married partner

A consort is a spouse, particularly of a monarch: prince consort, queen consort.

The word suggests partnership without equal status—the consort doesn't rule independently.

To consort with someone is to associate or keep company with them, often with disapproving overtones: He was seen consorting with known criminals.

A consort can also be a group of musicians playing together, especially early music ensembles.
