philharmonic

Large classical ensemble

Philharmonic means devoted to or loving music, from Greek roots meaning "friend of harmony." The word appears almost exclusively as part of the proper names of symphony orchestras and musical societies: the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic.

Used alone as a noun, it typically refers to such an orchestra or to the hall where it performs.

We have tickets to the philharmonic tonight.
