contrabassoon

Bassoon's lower sibling

A contrabassoon is the largest and lowest-pitched instrument in the double-reed woodwind family, sounding an octave below the standard bassoon.

Its tubing, if uncoiled, would extend over sixteen feet.

Orchestras use it to add depth and gravity to bass passages: The contrabassoon rumbled beneath the rest of the woodwinds.
