fipple
Recorder's air director
A fipple is the mouthpiece of a recorder, tin whistle, or similar wind instrument—specifically the plug or block that directs air across a sharp edge to produce sound.
Instruments with this design are sometimes called fipple flutes to distinguish them from transverse flutes, where the player blows across an open hole.
The fipple makes these instruments easier to play since the airflow is channeled automatically.
