string orchestra

Violins, violas, cellos

A string orchestra is an ensemble consisting entirely of stringed instruments—violins, violas, cellos, and double basses—without the wind, brass, or percussion sections of a full symphony orchestra.

The term also describes music composed for such a group: Barber's Adagio for Strings was written for string orchestra.
