ebonite

Rigid black rubber

Ebonite is a hard, dark rubber produced by vulcanizing natural rubber with high sulfur content.

The material resembles ebony in color and polish, hence the name.

Once common in electrical insulation, fountain pens, and bowling balls, ebonite has largely been replaced by modern plastics.

Also called vulcanite or hard rubber.
