whaleboat
Pointed bow and stern
A whaleboat is a long, narrow rowboat with pointed ends at both bow and stern, originally designed for hunting whales.
The double-ended design allowed the boat to reverse direction quickly—essential when a harpooned whale might drag or charge.
Whaleboats were light enough to be launched from a ship and maneuverable in rough seas.
The design influenced later lifeboats and naval craft.
