flatboat

Shallow-draft cargo vessel

A flatboat is a large, flat-bottomed boat used for transporting goods on rivers, especially in 19th-century America.

Unlike keelboats, flatboats had no keel and could only float downstream with the current.

They were typically broken up for lumber at their destination rather than returned upstream.

Settlers loaded their possessions onto flatboats and floated down the Ohio River.
