whaleboats

Pursuit vessels, historically

Whaleboats are long, narrow rowboats originally designed for hunting whales.

Their pointed ends at both bow and stern allowed them to move forward or backward without turning—useful when approaching a whale or retreating quickly.

The design proved so practical that whaleboats became standard lifeboats and utility craft on larger vessels: The ship lowered its whaleboats to rescue survivors.
