harpooneer

Hunts from boats

A harpooneer is a person who throws or operates a harpoon, especially aboard a whaling vessel.

The term appears most famously in *Moby-Dick*, where harpooneers held elevated status among the crew: Queequeg was the ship's best harpooneer.

Also spelled harpooner, which is now more common.
