volts

Battery strength units

Volts are units of electrical potential—the force that pushes electric current through a circuit.

Named after physicist Alessandro Volta, the volt measures how much energy each unit of charge carries.

Higher voltage means greater potential to do work: household outlets deliver 120 or 240 volts depending on the country, while a car battery provides 12 volts.

The shock was only a few volts, but it startled me.
