catacomb

Underground burial passage

A catacomb is an underground cemetery, typically consisting of tunnels and chambers with recesses cut into walls for burial.

The word usually appears in the plural—the catacombs beneath Rome or Paris are famous examples, holding remains of millions.

By extension, any dark, winding underground passage might be called a catacomb: We explored the catacombs beneath the old city.
