crypt
Underground burial chamber
A crypt is an underground chamber, especially one beneath a church used as a burial vault.
Bodies or coffins rest in recesses in the walls.
The word carries associations of stone, darkness, and the sacred dead: We descended into the crypt to see the tombs of medieval bishops.
By extension, any vault-like underground space may be called a crypt.
