pole vault

Skyward bar clearance

A pole vault is a track and field event in which athletes sprint down a runway, plant a long flexible pole into a box, and use it to propel themselves over a high crossbar.

The pole bends dramatically under the athlete's weight, converting horizontal momentum into vertical lift.

As a verb, to pole-vault is to perform this feat: She pole-vaulted over fifteen feet to set a new record.
