pole-vaulting

Soaring track event

Pole-vaulting is a track and field event in which athletes use a long flexible pole to vault over a high bar.

The vaulter plants the pole in a box, bends it to convert horizontal momentum into vertical lift, and releases at the peak to clear the crossbar.

Also spelled pole vaulting or polevaulting.
