vaults

Pole-assisted jumps

Vaults are secure rooms or chambers, typically reinforced and locked, used to store valuables: a bank vault, a wine vault.

The word extends to arched ceilings or roof structures, and to underground burial chambers.

To vault is to leap over something using hands or a pole: She vaulted the fence.

In gymnastics, the vault is both the apparatus and the event.
