tillerman
One steering manually
A tillerman is the person who operates a tiller—the lever or wheel that steers a boat.
On sailing vessels, the tillerman controls the rudder and maintains course.
The term also applies to the firefighter who steers the rear wheels of a hook-and-ladder truck, sitting in a separate cab at the back: The tillerman guided the long truck around the tight corner.
