wheelsman
Vessel navigation operator
A wheelsman is the person who steers a ship, operating the wheel that controls the rudder.
The term is mostly nautical and somewhat old-fashioned, now often replaced by helmsman.
In some contexts, wheelsman refers to anyone who operates a wheel—a driver or cyclist—but this use is rare: The wheelsman guided the vessel through the narrow channel.
