alembic
Alchemist's distilling apparatus
An alembic is a vessel used for distillation, consisting of a gourd-shaped container and a cap with a long spout for collecting condensed vapors.
Once common in alchemy and early chemistry, the word now appears mainly in figurative contexts for anything that refines or transforms: The alembic of experience had tempered her idealism.
