sulfur hexafluoride

Dense electrical insulator

Sulfur hexafluoride is a colorless, odorless, nontoxic gas composed of one sulfur atom bonded to six fluorine atoms.

It is exceptionally dense—about five times heavier than air—which makes it useful as an electrical insulator in high-voltage equipment and as a contrast agent in medical imaging.

The gas is famously known for producing a deep, bass voice when inhaled, the opposite effect of helium.

It is also a potent greenhouse gas, persisting in the atmosphere for thousands of years.
