myrrh

Fragrant tree sap

Myrrh is an aromatic resin obtained from certain trees native to Arabia and eastern Africa.

It has been used since ancient times in incense, perfumes, and medicines.

Myrrh appears frequently in biblical contexts—one of the gifts the Magi brought to the infant Jesus—giving the word a ceremonial or sacred connotation: frankincense and myrrh.
