frankincense

Aromatic tree sap

Frankincense is an aromatic resin obtained from trees of the genus Boswellia, native to the Arabian Peninsula and northeastern Africa.

It has been prized for millennia as incense in religious ceremonies and is one of the gifts the Magi brought to the infant Jesus according to Christian tradition.

When burned, frankincense produces a distinctive sweet, woody smoke used in worship across many faiths.

It also appears in perfumes and traditional medicine.
