ambrosia

Olympian gods' cuisine

Ambrosia is the food of the gods in Greek mythology, conferring immortality on those who consume it.

By extension, anything exceptionally delicious or fragrant may be called ambrosia: This chocolate cake is pure ambrosia.

In American cuisine, ambrosia is a sweet fruit salad made with canned fruit, marshmallows, coconut, and whipped cream—a staple at potlucks and holiday meals.

The word also names a genus of plants including ragweed, whose pollen causes widespread allergic misery. (Capitalized Ambrosia is the plant genus.)
