compounds

Substances with bonds

Compounds are things made by combining two or more elements.

In chemistry, a compound is a substance formed when atoms of different elements bond together—water is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen.

In grammar, a compound word joins existing words: blackbird, mother-in-law.

A compound sentence links independent clauses.

As a verb, to compound means to combine or intensify: His lies only compounded the problem.

A compound can also be an enclosed area containing buildings: a military compound, a prison compound—this sense comes from a different word entirely.
