plait

Interwoven hair rope

A plait is a length of hair or other material divided into strands and woven together by crossing them over one another—what Americans more commonly call a braid: She wore her hair in a single plait down her back.

The word is more common in British English.

To plait is to create such a weave.

The spelling reflects French origins, though some pronounce it to rhyme with "plate" and others with "flat."
