strands
Rope's twisted components
Strands are long thin pieces of something—hair, fiber, rope, wire.
A rope is made of strands twisted together; a strand of hair falls across someone's face.
The word extends to abstract threads: strands of an argument, the different strands of her research.
To strand is to leave someone stuck somewhere, especially by water: The tide stranded the boat on the sandbar.
A stranded traveler is stuck without transportation or resources.
