strandings

Whales on beaches

Strandings is the plural of stranding—instances of becoming stranded.

The word appears most often in contexts of marine animals that wash ashore and cannot return to the water: Mass strandings of pilot whales occur periodically along this coastline.

It also covers ships run aground or travelers left without transportation: Flight cancellations caused strandings across the region.
