throughline

Narrative connecting element

A throughline is the central thread connecting elements of a narrative, argument, or body of work.

In theater, it refers to an actor's character motivation running through a play.

More broadly, it describes the unifying idea that ties together seemingly disparate parts: The throughline of her career has been advocacy for the marginalized.

Also spelled through-line or through line.
