sponsoring

Paying to support

Sponsoring is providing financial or other support for an event, organization, or person, typically in exchange for publicity or goodwill: The company is sponsoring this year's marathon.

A corporation sponsoring a charity event gets its name displayed; a viewer sponsoring a child abroad sends monthly payments.

Sponsoring can also mean vouching for someone's membership or application: She's sponsoring my visa.
