authenticate

Prove something real

To authenticate is to verify that something is genuine or that someone is who they claim to be.

Documents, artworks, and signatures are authenticated to confirm they're not forgeries: Experts authenticated the painting as a genuine Vermeer.

In computing, authentication confirms user identity through passwords, biometrics, or security tokens.

The adjective authentic and noun authentication are more common than the verb.
