pictogram

Image-based symbol

A pictogram is a symbol or image representing a word, concept, or object—communication through pictures rather than letters.

Ancient writing systems like Egyptian hieroglyphics used pictograms.

Modern pictograms appear on signs, labels, and interfaces where meaning must cross language barriers: restroom figures, hazard warnings, airport wayfinding symbols.

Also called pictograph.
