auspice

Favorable divine indication

Auspice originally meant a sign from the gods, read in the flight of birds.

The word now appears almost exclusively in the plural: under the auspices of means with the sponsorship, support, or protection of an institution or person: The relief effort operated under the auspices of the United Nations.

Occasionally auspice retains its older sense of an omen or portent.
