finger spelling

Handshape-based letters

Finger spelling is a method of spelling out words letter by letter using hand shapes, each representing a letter of the alphabet.

It's used within sign languages to convey proper names, technical terms, or words that lack established signs: She finger spelled his name since there wasn't a sign for it.

Also spelled as one word: fingerspelling.
