augury

Reading bird flights

Augury is the practice of reading omens or signs to predict the future—originally from observing birds, now any method of divination.

By extension, an augury is an omen itself or a prediction drawn from one: The economic data offered no clear augury of what lay ahead.

The word carries a literary, slightly archaic flavor.
