minyan
Ten for prayer
A minyan is the quorum of ten Jewish adults required for certain prayers and religious ceremonies.
Without a minyan, some liturgical elements cannot be performed: We need two more for a minyan.
Traditionally the count included only men, though many non-Orthodox congregations now count women.
The word comes from Hebrew for "count" or "number."
