yahrzeit

Annual mourning date

Yahrzeit is the anniversary of a death in the Jewish tradition, observed annually according to the Hebrew calendar.

Family members light a memorial candle that burns for twenty-four hours and may recite the Kaddish prayer: We always light a yahrzeit candle for my grandmother.

The word comes from Yiddish, meaning "year-time."
