bar mitzvah
Turning thirteen ceremonially
A bar mitzvah is a Jewish coming-of-age ceremony for boys, traditionally held at age thirteen, marking religious adulthood and responsibility for following Jewish law.
The term refers both to the ceremony itself and to the boy undergoing it: My nephew's bar mitzvah is next Saturday.
The equivalent ceremony for girls is a bat mitzvah.
