ark
Sacred chest aboard
An ark is a vessel of refuge or salvation, most familiar from the biblical story of Noah's ark, the boat that preserved animals during the great flood.
By extension, any container that protects something precious may be called an ark.
The Ark of the Covenant was the chest holding the Ten Commandments.
In Jewish tradition, an ark is also the cabinet in a synagogue where Torah scrolls are kept.
The old barn served as an ark for the stray animals she collected. (Capitalized Ark may refer to the biblical vessel specifically or appear in proper names.)
