kiddush

Wine blessing ritual

Kiddush is the Jewish blessing recited over wine to sanctify the Sabbath or a holiday.

The prayer is typically said before the Friday evening meal or at the start of a festival.

By extension, kiddush refers to the light refreshments served after synagogue services: We stayed for kiddush after Shabbat morning services. (Capitalized Kiddush appears at the beginning of sentences but refers to the same ritual.)
