havdalah

Division between things

Havdalah is the Jewish ceremony marking the end of Shabbat and the beginning of the new week.

The ritual involves blessings over wine, fragrant spices, and a braided candle with multiple wicks.

The spices are said to comfort the soul as the "extra soul" of Shabbat departs.

We gathered for havdalah as the first stars appeared.

Also spelled havdala or habdalah. (Capitalized Havdalah is the same ceremony.)
